Something about Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou
The impressive Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou sits on the banks of the Gironde Estuary in the appellation of Saint-Julien. The 245 hectare estate, with 100 hectares planted with vines, has been owned and operated by the Borie family, who resides at the estate, for over 61 years. Ducru-Beacaillou’s unique name is derived from the “beau caillou”, French for “beautiful stones” which are abundant in the soils of the estate. The Gironde has moderating effect on the climate of the estate creating milder winters and cooler summers, which allows the grapes to have a more homgeneous growing season that favours the production of a “grand vin”.

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou bursts from the glass with bombastic crème de cassis, black cherry compote and preserved plums notes followed by hints of menthol, hoisin, dusty soil and incense plus fragrant wafts of candied violets and baker’s chocolate. Full bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, the palate offers a beautifully plush texture and bags of freshness, finishing long and layered. An absolute powerhouse! 2020 - 2050
The 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a tightly wound and almost Pauillac-like bouquet, veins of graphite strafing the black fruit, tightly wound but it is tremendously focused and vibrant. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin that disguise the density and grip of this Saint-Julien. Powerful to the point of being stentorian, yet utterly compelling, it will need another three or four years in bottle. Extremely impressive - a Ducru-Beaucaillou showing what it can do. The purity of fruit is wonderful in this, with plums, currants and hints of fresh mushrooms. Hints of cloves too. Full-bodied, with chewy, creamy tannins and a bright fresh finish. Super energy and intensity. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Better in 2018.
45 hl/ha, 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot. IPT (total polyphenol index) was 90 (ie high).Very dark crimson. Crimson, purple rim. Dense and peppery and quite mineral. Much more serious on the nose than the Croix de Beaucaillou. Very polished. Lots of energy. Bone dry, spicy finish. Pretty drying tannins. Not really as soft as Bruno Borie maintains, I think. Cool and slightly tarry. Very very youthful. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2019-2030.
The 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou will eclipse the brilliant wines produced in 2005, 2003, and 2000. It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. full-bodied and intense with Ducru's inimitable elegance and purity, it should firm up in the bottle after 7-10 years of cellaring and last for 40-50 years. Magnificent!
