2012 PICHON BARON / 碧尚男爵

Something about Chateau Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron is one of the most prestigious Pauillac wines and a majestic property on the Left Bank in the Bordeaux region. Located on the Médoc “Route des Chateaux” (the Castle Road), this Second Classified Growth of 1855 leaves no one indifferent. The estate’s imposing structure is reflected with grandeur and brilliance in the water mirror that rests just in front of it, and under this water mirror is the château’s underground cellar. “Pichon Baron” underwent major modernization once it entered under the control of the AXA Group at the end of the 1980s. With modern infrastructure and a vineyard largely replanted, Château Pichon Baron has reached a peak of excellence that matches the First Great Classified Growths.

With a mosaic of terroirs and ideally located near the Gironde estuary, the Pichon Baron vineyard covers 73 hectares of vines growing in perfectly drained Médoc gravel soils.

To bring out the expression of this exception terroir to give wines with a unique identity and timeless charm, the passion and commitment of the Château Pichon Baron technical team under the direction of Christian Seely since 2001 drives them. The extreme precision in parcel selection makes it possible to make blends of great finesse, complexity and incomparable concentration.

With 3 iconic labels, Château Pichon Baron produces different expressions of the great terroir of Pauillac, an appellation recognized for some of the greatest wines in the world. Château Pichon Baron is the estate’s first wine produced in limited quantities, and it comes from a rigorous selection of the oldest vines on the estate. With immense class, this vintage displays a purity and intensity that only the greatest Pauillac wines have. It charms the palate with a dense, harmonious structure that continues all the way to the lingering finish. As an exceptional Pauillac, Château Pichon Baron is made for cellaring that will reveal all of its complexity and refinement throughout the decades. Flawless and expressive, Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the estate’s second wine with a personality in its own right, which is blended from parcels near the Gironde estuary. Les Tourelles de Longueville, named after the towers that adorn the château, is from vineyard plots planted with Merlot to give a fresh and supple expression of the terroir.

FROM THE
EXPERTS

As for the big sibling, the 2012 Pichon Baron (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) probably has the most saturated purple color of the Pauillacs. Its structure is apparent, and the wine offers a wealth of blackcurrant fruit interwoven with licorice, graphite, and background toasty oak. Full-bodied, opulent and moderately tannic, this wine is approachable now because of its low acidity, but promises to age beautifully for 20+ years. This is another great classic from Pichon Baron. Drink: 2015-2035.

Tasted en primeur at the château. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot picked between 1st and 17th October, the old vines picked form 8th October. It has a strict, quite conservative bouquet that is very focused: sous-bois, graphite and just a touch of mint. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy entry. There is a good edginess here lent by the citric acidity with a very composed, harmonious finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Very fine - but much more classic in style than recent vintages - in fact, more like Latour! Tasted April 2013.

A pretty core of ripe-berry, currant and mineral character to this red with a full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish to add. Creamy texture. Better in 2017.

The 2012 Pichon-Longueville Baron is wonderfully aromatic and textured in the glass. Scents of smoke, pipe tobacco and cedar meld into a core of intense dark fruit. Pliant and supple, but with considerable underlying structure, the 2012 is likely to drink well for the next two to three decades, perhaps longer, but it is also going to need at least a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften. Drink 2020-2037.

20% Merlot, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. 15-80 years old. Bright dark crimson. Glows with health. Great vigour on the nose. Amazing sweetness on the front palate. Thick and rich. Cool and fresh. This wine goes to the gym. A little hard on the finish. Needs lots of time but twinkles with health. Lots of energy. Just a tad dry and demanding on the finish. Subtle and (very) dry on the end.
