2009 PICHON BARON / 碧尚男爵

Something about Chateau Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron is one of the most prestigious Pauillac wines and a majestic property on the Left Bank in the Bordeaux region. Located on the Médoc “Route des Chateaux” (the Castle Road), this Second Classified Growth of 1855 leaves no one indifferent. The estate’s imposing structure is reflected with grandeur and brilliance in the water mirror that rests just in front of it, and under this water mirror is the château’s underground cellar. “Pichon Baron” underwent major modernization once it entered under the control of the AXA Group at the end of the 1980s. With modern infrastructure and a vineyard largely replanted, Château Pichon Baron has reached a peak of excellence that matches the First Great Classified Growths.

With a mosaic of terroirs and ideally located near the Gironde estuary, the Pichon Baron vineyard covers 73 hectares of vines growing in perfectly drained Médoc gravel soils.

To bring out the expression of this exception terroir to give wines with a unique identity and timeless charm, the passion and commitment of the Château Pichon Baron technical team under the direction of Christian Seely since 2001 drives them. The extreme precision in parcel selection makes it possible to make blends of great finesse, complexity and incomparable concentration.

With 3 iconic labels, Château Pichon Baron produces different expressions of the great terroir of Pauillac, an appellation recognized for some of the greatest wines in the world. Château Pichon Baron is the estate’s first wine produced in limited quantities, and it comes from a rigorous selection of the oldest vines on the estate. With immense class, this vintage displays a purity and intensity that only the greatest Pauillac wines have. It charms the palate with a dense, harmonious structure that continues all the way to the lingering finish. As an exceptional Pauillac, Château Pichon Baron is made for cellaring that will reveal all of its complexity and refinement throughout the decades. Flawless and expressive, Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the estate’s second wine with a personality in its own right, which is blended from parcels near the Gironde estuary. Les Tourelles de Longueville, named after the towers that adorn the château, is from vineyard plots planted with Merlot to give a fresh and supple expression of the terroir.

FROM THE
EXPERTS

The 2009 Pichon-Baron replicates its epic performance at the vertical tasted last year. It has one of the finest bouquets among the group of Pauillac with copious blackberry, mint, melted tar and graphite notes, fresh and supremely well focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well judged acidity. Harmonious with plenty of tobacco and pencil lead infused black fruit towards the persistent finish. Awesome. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Drink 2023 - 2045.

The 2009 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a medium to deep garnet color and a very meaty/savory nose over a core of sweaty leather, baked blackberries and plums with notions of crème de cassis, sautéed herbs and black olives coming through with coaxing. Full, rich, concentrated and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate has beautifully plush tannins and an herbal lift on the long finish. 2020 - 2048.

Amazing aromas of ripe currants and plums with flowers. Full body, with super fine tannins and wonderful fruit. It is energized. Better than I remember it from barrel. Reminds me of the 1990 PB. Try after 2020.

Sweet ink and purity. What's not to like in this essence of not-too-hot claret? Very pure indeed with an amazingly cool finish. Drink 2016-2038

This great vineyard has been producing classic Pauillac since the late 1980's when Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch Bages took control. For the last few years Englishman Christian Seely has been in charge and quality continues to rise. Latour-like in style, Pichon Baron has been a star performer in all our recent blind vintage tastings. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and aged in 80% new oak. The Grand Vin is now produced only from the vineyards near Latour with those that used to go into the blend now making the second wine - Les Tourelles de Longueville. The breakdown is 45% grand vin, 50% Tourelles and 5% generic. An opaque colour. A huge, soaring nose of dense black fruit. On the palate it is absolutely massive with layer upon layer of cassis fruit spiced with hints of vanilla, spice and cigar box. The massive fruit is more than matched by the huge tannins. The balance is perfect. This is certainly going to take time to mature but when it does the wine will be a modern day equivalent of the awesome 1990 that was made here. An absolute classic that rivals the very top names in 2009. Brilliant.
