Something about Chateau Rauzan Segla
For almost 400 years, Château Rauzan-Ségla, a Second Great Classified Growth of 1855, reigns over the lands of the prestigious Margaux appellation located on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.
Château Rauzan-Ségla has risen to the top of the wines of its appellation due to the restructuring of its vineyard, the modernization of its winery and cellar, and the owners’ careful attention to details.
As the proverb says, great terroirs face the water, and this is true for Château Rauzan-Ségla since it is next to the Gironde. A true mosaic of terroirs, the Château Rauzan-Ségla vineyard benefits from an exceptional location. The river plays a role in influencing the weather and it is also the origin of the renowned Garrone gravel that is deposited along the banks. This gravel captures heat from the sun during the day and then uses it to keep the soils warm at night, which helps the vine ripen its berries. In addition to the deep gravel, the Rauzan-Ségla vineyard has fine gravel ridges and clay-limestone soil. These poor soils are perfect for growing the typical Médoc grape varieties. The symbolic Left Bank black grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, represents the majority of the vines with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc making up the rest.
An excellent terroir for exceptional wines, Château Rauzan-Ségla wines are a model of the Margaux appellation. Bringing together power and finesse, they express the purest form of the terroir. Château Rauzan-Ségla wines are complex and intense. They reveal a magnificent bouquet revealing fresh red berry perfumes and delicate floral violet notes. The palate offers a smooth mouthfeel with a silky texture framed with the well-structured tannins from Cabernet Sauvignon. A true symbol of Margaux.

The 2015 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc and was matured in 65% new and 35% one-year-old barrels for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up a myriad of softly spoken fresh berry, floral and fragrant earth notes, including crushed red and black currants, black raspberries and menthol notes with touches of cigar box, lavender, violets, smoked meats, black truffles and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, the palate possesses an arresting quiet intensity of many tightly wound, subtle layers, finishing on a lingering mineral note. Very polished and precise, this Rauzan-Ségla is truly a triumph! 2024 - 2047
The 2015 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) was a magnificent wine out of barrel, but what matters, of course, is how you and I find this Margaux in bottle. Well, it has a disarmingly beautiful, almost haunting bouquet with pure black fruit laced with cedar, orange blossom and violet aromas that blossom in the glass. I cannot recollect a Rauzan-Segla as delineated as this. The palate is medium-bodied but with ripe, quite bold tannin that lends this wine much more volume than in previous vintages. This just fills the mouth and satiates the senses. There is a fine line of acidity here and tints of black truffle. There is a wondrous mineral tension on the finish and yet this is a Margaux that is determined and succeeds in satiating all the senses...apart from sound. So put your favorite musician on and savor this exceptional wine over the coming years. A benchmark. Anticipated maturity: 2021 - 2060.
Extremely aromatic with dried flowers, perfumed and sandalwood and blackcurrants. Full body, ultra-fine tannins, a gorgeous core of ripe fruit and blackcurrants and blueberries. Racy and very long. So impressive. This needs four or five years to come around but already so fine.
The 2015 Rauzan-Ségla is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. Rich, sumptuous and super-intense, the 2015 envelops the palate. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, licorice, leather, tobacco and menthol are all given an extra kick of richness in a dramatic, exceptionally beautiful Rauzan-Ségla that clearly swings for the fences. Although quite concentrated and sumptuous, the 2015 also retains considerable nuance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2015 can look forward to several decades of fine drinking. This is terrific effort from estate manager Nicolas Audebert, who wasted no time in sending a strong message about his ambitions in his first full-time vintage at Rauzan-Ségla. The 2015 is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. 2025 - 2045
Tasted blind. Savoury, fresh with Oxo meat-extract notes. Rather hard on the end but probably trying not to be too sweet. Lovely texture and freshness. Leathery texture on the end. Just slightly sickly. Drink 2024-2044
